Smoke and Mirrors

Rational minds are saying that Iran's recent missile launches (which apparently have been beefed up thanks to the magic of technology) were an effort to give the country more leverage should they decide to come to the table and talk about disassembling their nuclear program.

Meanwhile, equally rational minds such as Salon's Joe Conason are warning us that the Bush administration is laying on pressure about a potential military strike against the country. (I guess Dubya had enough "negotiating" with North Korea and doesn't want to appear soft??)

Not only would this be disastrous in terms of world order, it certainly wouldn't solve anything. Attacking Iran isn't going to stop terrorism and extremism. More than likely it would increase it. Nor will military measures against the country make gas prices better. I am certain the opposite would happen, as the Middle East would be thrown in even greater turmoil. And it won't improve the situation in Iraq, which might actually be getting better through the support of Iran, its neighbor. Go figure.

The Bush administration assures us that they would use force as a last resort. Well we have heard that bedtime story before and more than 4,000 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis have died because of it. What further atrocities will our country and the rest of the world have to endure due to the irrationality of this administration? Their flagrant disregard for reality continues to astound me, just when I think they have reached their limit.

Every day I am left questioning if we can just make it until the end of Bush's term. 193 days and counting . . .

Like you, I just can't figure out what the hell the Bush administration and its supporters are thinking. War with Iran? Hmm, let's see, we already have some Sunnis angry at us for Iraq, so now let's piss off the Shias and bring down the wrath of all Islam down on our heads. Of course it will increase terrorism, and it will not improve gas prices.

So what gives? Damned if I know.

Interesting. Has anyone considered that maybe we are posturing because the rest of the world is scared to. Dont get me wrong, I dont think that Bush is the brightest, but the man has a set of balls, and stands up for what we believe in. Iran let the hostages go way back when because they feared what Reagan would do. They hated us when Carter was in office, but did not fear us. They hated us when Clinton was in office, but they did not fear us they still hate us now but yes, they once again fear us. Do not think for a second that if Obama is in office they will start to like us, they will just again stop fearing us. Who gives a shit if we piss off the whole Arab world. What does it change. Do you think we have friends there? If a few of them turned up the oil production, it would have saved our economy which is near the breaking point. They did not. I am sure that you all knew or knew who the high school bully was. You may not have liked him, but you also did not get in his face. If Bush has accomplished nothing else, he has shown the world that we do not tuck tail and run. As far as gas, if we had drilled 10 years ago when Clinton vetoed it, we would now be producing the oil that everyone is saying it would do no good to start drilling for now, because it would take 10 years to get. Interesting that a country like the U.S. that has more reserves than the entire Mid-East is paying over $4.00 a gal. at the pump while the Saudis pay .45 cents. Yeah radical enviormentalist. The economy is on a fast track to collapse, but hey that moose 2000 miles away doesnt have to look at an oil well.
